Dermatology is the study of diseases affecting the largest organ of the body: the skin. This also includes diseases of the ears and nails. Unfortunately the skin has a limited ability to react to various insults, so multiple diseases may present with similar symptoms, sometimes making diagnosis very challenging. The causes of skin diseases include, but are not limited to, external parasites, environmental and /or food allergens, infections, metabolic diseases, genetics, and cancer. Our dermatology specialist, Dr. Emily Rothstein, will take an extensive patient history, including medications previously used in treating the patient’s skin condition. Further testing may include skin scrapings, fine needle aspirates, skin biopsies, and allergy testing as well as laboratory blood testing for internal disease. In some cases our specialists cooperate and benefit from each other’s expertise in diagnosing and treating complex cases involving the skin as well as other organ systems of the body.
