Technicians, assistants and receptionists are all welcome. There is no fee to attend.<span id="more-1011"></span></p>
<p>All events begin at 6:30 PM. A light dinner will be provided along with an optional tour of Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center. The seminars will run from 7:00 &#8211; 8:00 PM.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://piepermemorial.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/DrPieper5.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-38" title="Dr. Pieper" src="http://piepermemorial.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/DrPieper5-150x150.jpg" alt="Dr. Pieper" width="150" height="150" /></a>Dr. Pieper was born in Newington Connecticut and was raised on a dairy farm.  He graduated from Hartford High School in 1928 and the New York State Veterinary College at Cornell University in 1932.  He returned to Connecticut to open his private practice in 1933 catering to both large and small animals.<span id="more-27"></span></p>
<p>He left his Middletown practice for four years to serve as a major in the Army Veterinary Corps Service Command in New England at which time he received a commendation medal for outstanding service.  He returned to Middletown to continue his practice after leaving the service.</p>
<p>In 1985 Dr. Pieper sold his practice to Dr. Robert Olson and Dr. Virgina Nunez Olson. Dr. Pieper continued to practice on a part time basis until he completely retired in 1987.</p>
<p><strong>Lifetime Achivements and Awards</strong></p>

<p>Over his lifetime Dr. Pieper had served in the following roles:</p>
<ul>
<li>1940-1941 President of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)</li>
<li>1948-1980 Delegate from the CVMA to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) House of Delegates</li>
<li>1949-1950 President of the New England Veterinary Medical Association (NEVMA)</li>
<li>1952 Vice president of the AVMA</li>
<li>1952-1955 Chaired the AVMA Council on Education</li>
<li>1956-1963 Served as a member of the AVMA Council on Education</li>
<li>1960-1963 Chairman of the AVMA House of Delegates Advisory Committee</li>
<li>1965-1975 Served on the AVMA Judicial Council of the House of Delegates</li>
</ul>
<p>He helped in the control and elimination of two cattle diseases in Middlesex County in the 1960s.</p>
<p>Dr. Pieper also served on several educational organizations.</p>
<ul>
<li>The National commission for evaluating veterinary college standards in North America</li>
<li>The Governor Lodge’s commission to study the needs of establishing colleges of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine in Connecticut</li>
<li>The Medical Education Facilities Review Committee for the National Institutes of Health, part of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare</li>
<li>The New England Board of Higher Education</li>
<li>The Governor Grasso commission to study the feasibility of establishing a college of veterinary medicine at the University of Connecticut</li>
</ul>
<p>Locally, Dr. Pieper was active in the following.</p>
<ul>
<li>Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boys Scouts of America</li>
<li>President of the Middletown Lions Club</li>
<li>Corporator of the Middlesex Memorial Hospital</li>
<li>Member of the Blue Lodge, Knights Templar and Shrine</li>
<li>Corporator of Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank, serving as director from 1966-1980</li>
</ul>
<p>Dr. Pieper received the following honors.</p>
<ul>
<li>1964 AVMA Award for his contributions to the advancement of veterinary medicine in its organizational aspects</li>
<li>1968 By the Middlesex Dairy Farmers for his outstanding efforts in agriculture</li>
<li>1977 By the State Veterinary Medical Association for his efforts in agriculture</li>
<li>1977 Resolution passed by the Connecticut General Assembly commending him for his contributions to agriculture</li>
<li>1977 Recipient of the Bicentennial Medal issued by the University of Connecticut College of Agriculture and Natural Resources for contributions to agriculture in Connecticut</li>
<li>1978 A $100,000 scholarship fund to assist veterinary students from Connecticut and New England was established in Dr. Pieper’s name at Cornell University</li>
<li>1978 Inducted into Gamma Sigma Delta, National Honorary Agricultural Society</li>
<li>1984 Outstanding Middlesex County citizen</li>
<li>1992 The Founders Award from the Baker Institute at Cornell University</li>
